Privacy

StackRank is designed to work without an account. Your movie ranking stays in this browser unless you choose to sign in and sync it. The experimental Books preview is device-only and does not sync or publish book data. StackRank Dogs keeps a device copy while signed out and can sync its separate ranking and lists when you sign in.

Effective July 21, 2026

What is stored

While signed out, StackRank stores your ranking, watch and skip queues, pack progress, and Share Studio preferences in your browser’s local storage. This data does not leave your device except when a feature needs movie data or you intentionally download, share, or import something.

If you sign in, Supabase stores your account identity and syncs the supported Movies and Dogs rankings, queues or lists, and pack progress so they are available on your other devices. StackRank does not receive or store a password.

The Books preview separately stores its ranking in this browser. Book search sends the text you type to a StackRank server function, which requests matching works from Open Library. Books data is not included in account sync or public sharing.

Dogs uses a versioned catalog bundled with the site, so breed and alias searches do not send the text you type to an external catalog service. Dogs backups and text exports are created only when you request them. If you sign in, Dogs syncs its ranking, Curious about list, Not for me list, and pack progress in Dogs-specific account records. A public Dogs ranking is a read-only snapshot created only when you choose Publish; later changes stay private until you update it, and you can revoke the link. Dogs never reads or rewrites Movies or Books browser keys.

Services the app contacts

  • TMDB supplies movie search results, details, suggestions, and artwork. Those requests are proxied through StackRank’s Supabase functions.
  • Open Library supplies search results and cover links for the experimental Books preview. Search requests are proxied through a StackRank Supabase function; cover images load from Open Library’s cover service.
  • Vertebrate Breed Ontology (VBO) supplies the versioned identity and alias foundation bundled with StackRank Dogs. Searching the bundled Dogs catalog does not contact VBO. When rights-approved dog photos are available, each detail view names the creator, source page, and exact license.
  • Supabase provides optional account sign-in, cross-device sync, read-only public ranking snapshots, server functions, and privacy-bounded product events.
  • Vercel hosts the site and provides aggregate Web Analytics pageviews.
  • Google Fonts and jsDelivr deliver the site font and the Supabase browser library.

Like most internet services, these providers may receive normal connection metadata such as an IP address and browser information when your device contacts them. Their handling of that data is governed by their own policies.

Product measurement

StackRank measures whether core flows work and get used. Custom product events use a temporary per-page identifier, accept only an allowlist of coarse properties, and never include movie titles, movie IDs, email addresses, or account IDs. StackRank also uses Vercel Web Analytics for aggregate pageviews.

“Do Not Track” and Global Privacy Control signals disable StackRank’s custom product events. StackRank does not sell personal information, run behavioral advertising, or use advertising cookies.

Your controls

You can download a full backup, clear your ranking, restore or import a list, and sign out from the settings menu. Clearing browser storage removes signed-out data from that browser. To request deletion of a signed-in account and its server data, email stackrank@danbretl.com.

Ranking and account data is kept while you use the service or until it is deleted. Limited operational and product-measurement records are retained only as needed to operate and evaluate StackRank.

Dog catalog & photography

StackRank Dogs identity and aliases are derived from the Vertebrate Breed Ontology, release 2026-04-15, licensed under CC BY 4.0. StackRank’s generated coverage report preserves an explicit disposition for every source descendant below “Dog breed.”

Dog photos are shown only after their creator, source, exact license, file hash, human subject review, and delivery artifact pass the purpose-specific rights ledger. Missing photography uses a neutral fallback; catalog inclusion never depends on image availability.
